Your entryway is the first thing you see when you open the front door. After a summer of sandy bags, stray sunglasses and an array of flip-flops, it is likely looking a little chaotic. As the weather turns, your hallway needs to work a lot harder! Here is how to declutter and reset your entrance for the cosy months ahead.
As summer departs, before you bring in a single blanket or boot, you need to clear the slate.
- The coat hook edit: Take everything off the hooks. Be honest, will you need that denim jacket or lightweight rain coat? clean them, zip them up and move them to a wardrobe or other storage.
- The shoe clear out: Pack away flip-flops, sandals and canvas trainers. If they are worn out recycle or bin them, if not clean them and store them away.
Autumn accessories are small but numerous and if you do not give them a home, your entryway table or floor will quickly disappear under a mountain of gloves, hats and scarfs.
- The basket system: Ideally allocate one basket per person, this keeps everyone responsible for their own items. Place these under a low shelf or under a bench so children can easily reach and put away belongings. If you have limited space, opt for a tote bag each hung on a hook.
Prepping for unsettled conditions, the autumn weather brings mud, wet leaves and rain so prep your floor now to save yourself endless mopping later.
- The boot tray: Introduce a heavy duty boot tray next to the door. A great tip is to line it with pebbles to let boots drain.
- Umbrella stand: Place a dedicated stand or a tall ceramic vase right by the door so wet brollies don't drip.
Letting go of the summer clutter is the perfect way to embrace a fresh start this autumn. Don't feel like you have to tackle everything in one day; take one room or even one drawer at a time.
Nature is currently reminding us how beautiful it can be to let things go. By cleaning out the excess now, you are creating a peaceful, cosy sanctuary to retreat into all winter long. Nothing beats returning home after a long day to a clear entrance and a full functional home that supports you.
Please do let me know how you get on with making room for those "Brr" months, would love to hear from you so leave your comments below or if you need help one to one complete an enquiry form.
