The September Kitchen Edit: 5 Steps to refresh your pantry for Autumn

Refresh your kitchen for Autumn. Use these 5 simple steps to declutter your pantry, clear your counters, and prepare for cosy seasonal cooking.

September always feels like a second New Year. As the chaotic energy of summer winds down and the evenings grow cooler, our attention naturally shifts back indoors. There is no better place to start your autumn home refresh than the heart of the home: the kitchen.

Before the busy season of autumn baking, full school routines, and festive cooking arrives, taking an hour to reset your pantry/cupboards will save you time, money and daily stress. Here are my five simple steps to edit and organise your kitchen for the upcoming season.

1. The food Expiry Date Sweep - clearing out summer items and expired goods

  • Check the dates: Bin any stale crackers, expired baking ingredients, or half-empty salad dressings left over from summer barbecues
  • Donate what you won't use: If you bought bulk snacks for summer trips that family didn't eat, donate unopened items to your local food bank or supermarket collection.
  • Wipe it down: Take advantage of the empty shelves to wipe away crumbs, dust, and sticky rings before putting anything back.

2. Group by Autumn cooking habits - creating dedicated zones for baking, soups and hot drinks

  • The Hot Drink Station: Gather your autumn teas, coffee pods, hot chocolate and favourite mugs into one easily accessible cabinet or tray near the kettle.
  • The Baking Corner: Move flour, sugar, spices and baking tins from the back of the cupboard to a mid-level shelf if you plan on doing lots of autumn baking.

3. Decant and Containerise - Choosing clear, functional storage for a minimalist look

Transfer high-use staples like oats, pasta, rice and flour into clear glass or airtight jars. Decanting not only creates an instant, calming uniform look it also allows you to see exactly when you are running low on essentials at a single glance. Stick to square or rectangular containers where possible, as they utilise shelf space much more efficiently than round ones.

4. The Seasonal Wellness Purge - Double checking expiry dates

  • Check Supplement/Medicine Expiry dates: Probiotics, vitamins and liquid/solid medicines all have best before dates so bin anything past its expiry date.

5. The Spice Audit - Sniff test

Take 10 minutes this weekend to empty your spice cupboard, wipe down the shelf and do the sniff test on your baking/cooking spices; make sure your favourite autumn spices are fresh and fully stocked. My key staples are Cinnamon, Ginger, Cloves and Allspice.

With your pantry/cupboards cleared and your favourite autumn staples within arms reach, your kitchen is officially ready for the cosy season ahead. Taking just a little time to reset now means effortless, stress-free cooking. Now, I would like to hear from you!  What is the one autumn ingredient you absolutely cannot live without? Let me know in the comments below.

100% it has to be Cinnamon! More specifically Cinnamon sugar - I absolutely love baking apple crumbles and adding a bit of cinnamon sugar means the house smells even more autumnal! 😊

Oh Chloe yes to Cinnamon, especially in my staple banana and chocolate chip cake adapted for Autumn/winter!

Autumn for me, means always having a jar of mixed spice in the cupboard, ready for any weekend baking.

Autumn is soup season for me - so time to get the lentils out. But Mum's store cupboard staple is a chicken stock cube - has to be Knorr. It's the base of most things she makes!
